‘Terrifying trend:’ Possible heroin overdoses skyrocketing

A warning for a “terrifying trend” has been issued by one of the Lehigh Valley’s largest school districts.   Parkland High School in Lehigh County posted on its Facebook page that the Lehigh County Drug and Alcohol administrator said there has been a spike in heroin-related overdoses in the past week. There is concern that some of the possible overdoses have been caused by synthetic opioids such as fentanyl. The Lehigh County coroner’s office said there have been at least eight suspected drug overdoses since the weekend. The victims have ranged in age from 20 to 29.
Coroner Scott Grim said this number is significantly higher than usual. Parkland’s Facebook post said a large number of people have been seen in local emergency rooms with suspected heroin overdoses. Grim said he can’t confirm the deaths he’s seen were caused by drug overdoses or what drug caused them until he sees the toxicology results.  The results are pending.
